Q: Tell us a little more about yourself!

Since being self-employed in 2008, I've won awards for volunteerism, contributing to an organization's community engagement and social media, and publishing a book. My first business, Conscious Public Relations Inc., was a certified B Corporation. Besides publishing two books, I'm proud to be a vegan woman of colour and the co-host of Canada's only vegan networking group, VEG Networking Canada.

Q: What difficulties did you experience/encounter in your early career?

I haven't had many difficulties in my journey but there were many things I didn't know about how to run a business that have taken me many years to learn. Seeking mentors was one of the best things I've done, and the same for investing in self-publishing the world's first vegan marketing book. I've learned to always seek out help, be part of communities, take smart risks, never say no to a speaking opportunity (even if you're an introvert), and that compromising my values is never worth money.

Q: What specific skills or knowledge can you bring to our community from your experience/background?

I have skills and knowledge in media relations, marketing, publishing books, and veganism (removing animal products and byproducts from your lifestyle).

Q: If you could give our mentees and young women 1 piece of advice, what would it be?

My biggest lesson for others is to double down on who you are—it helps people to see the real you. And, remember that there are always different ways to do things. We're in an age of transparency and personal brand. People connect with you based on who you are. Woman of color? Share that. Queer? Share that. Visible minority? Share that. Share any and all aspects of who you are apologetically and don't let anyone put you down because of it.

Q: What female role model or leader influenced you in your own journey and why?

I have been fortunate to have many female role models influence my entrepreneurial journey, from mentors to social entrepreneurs. Lately I look to vegan women of color like Pinky Cole, Jenny Stojkovic and Tabitha Brown. They've influenced people to not only go vegan, but also are building their own successful vegan empires.

Q: Any resources you can share or recommend to our community?
